Considered as a reference in treating
leprosy in Latin America, São Julião Hospital in Campo Grande
– MS is arranged in a modern space, with well-equipped rooms
which offers the best and most updated treatment, prevention
and restitution of leprosy and others dermatological manifestations.
São Julião also contributes to
big clinical demands, pointing out its famous work in ophthalmology.
It has the acknowledgement of the Ministry of Health for
the support to SUS patients, being awarded as a hospital
in the Mid-West region with a high quality standard.
São Julião Hospital also presents
a good quality standard in helping everyone who goes there
searching for a treatment due to its solidarity and respect
for life, thanks to a countless workers and dedication of
its staff and medical professionals.
São Julião Hospital started its
project based on a Federal Government Program, which in 1941
built 36 asylum-colonies to isolate patients suffering from
leprosy. At that time, fear and prejudice were predominant.
The disease, extremely stigmatized, made them away from their
relatives’ intimacy.
In its first years, São Julião
was left aside. The patients’ care was pitiful and the building
conditions were regrettable, as a storehouse of sick people,
presenting a desolated picture.
From 1969, Italian volunteers
from Mato Grosso Expedition, started to work together and
took part into social and physical projects all over the
hospital. It was created then an association of benefactors
to run and keep the activities in the hospital. |
